Texas Electrical License Requirements 

In order to enrol for an apprenticeship program, you require an apprenticeship license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The only requirement to get this license is that you are at least 16 years old and willing to work under the supervision of a master electrician. 

To apply for a license, you must pay a non-refundable fee of $20.  You will then be linked to an apprenticeship program through your trade school. If you are yet to find a good electrical trade school Let us know. 

A Residential Wireman License 

The following Texas electrical license requirements are needed to get a residential wireman license: 

  • Have 4,000 hours of work experience  
  • Have been supervised by a master electrician 
  • Sit and pass a residential wireman license exam

A Journeyman Electrician License 

The next stage of your electrician training in Texas is acquiring a journeyman license. The following requirements must be met: 

  • Have worked under a master electrician for at least 8,000 hours 
  • Have an experience verification form 
  • Fill and submit your application to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation {TDLR}  
  • Pay a non-refundable fee of $35 
  • If your application is accepted you will be invited to sit for a journeyman exam that will be facilitated by PSI exams

Master Sign Electrician License 

To get a master sign electrician license, the following requirements must be met: 

  • Have an experience verification form for all past employers 
  • Have been supervised by a Master sign electrician for at least 12,000 hours 
  • Send an application to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation 
  • Pay a non-refundable license fee of $50 

With a master license, you can work in other states such as Louisiana and North Carolina as there is a reciprocity license. 

Maintenance Electrician License

The following Texas electrical license requirements are mandatory to become a maintenance electrician: 

  • Have worked under the supervision of a maintenance electrician for at least 8,000 hours  
  • Have an experience verification form for each employer 
  • Fill and submit an application to the TDLR 
  • Pay a license fee of $25
