Joining a Trade School 

Before you become an apprentice you must first join a trade school and acquire either a one-year diploma or a two-year degree in electrical technology. 

Joining an Apprenticeship Program 

After acquiring your diploma or degree you will be required to find an apprenticeship position through the Hawaii Electricians Training Fund {HETF}. To qualify you must be: 

  • 18 years or older 
  • Be a US citizen  
  • Have a GED 
  • Pass an aptitude test 

After your apprenticeship program, you will be able to sit for your journeyman exam. Other licenses that you will be eligible to apply for are: 

  • Residential Electrician 
  • Residential Master Electrician
